The Department

The Art Department provides our learners with opportunities to explore, invent, develop, discuss, take risks, reflect and communicate giving them the necessary skills to express themselves with confidence. The teachers in the Art Department are a very strong team of specialists whose impact on the skills and appreciation of Art across the School is clearly visible! Art is a very popular subject throughout the whole age range with various activities at lunchtime and after school.

The department is recognised as particularly successful in the County and is often approached for advice and ideas from other schools, both secondary and primary. Our results at both key stage 3 and 5 continue to be above the national average.

The Teaching

Key Stage 3 - In years 7, 8 and 9 Art is taught in mixed ability tutor groups, with students receiving one Art lesson a week. Across the 3 years students are introduced to a wide range of artistic experiences including drawing, painting, print making, ceramics and sculpture.

Key Stage 4 - In years 10 and 11 students are offered Art as an option choice. Around 25% of the cohort take GCSE Art (OCR) or BTEC level 2 option (Edexcel).

Key Stage 5 - In sixth form students can opt for OCR AS + A2 level in Fine Art or Edexcel's level 3 BTEC course. All students can specialise in a choice of painting and drawing, illustration, printmaking or 3D work as the team of specialist Art teachers can accommodate a wide range of skills.

The courses are planned by the whole team and are regularly reviewed to accommodate new technologies and new ways of thinking.

Each room is equipped with digital projection and a wide range of materials and resources including access to digital cameras and recording equipment as well as more traditional materials. Photoshop software is available on the whole school network and is used regularly with a range of teaching groups.
