Summary of subject content: This new GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition is an exciting and creative course which focuses on practical cooking skills to ensure students develop a thorough understanding of nutrition, food provenance and the working characteristics of food materials. At its heart, this qualification focuses on nurturing students' practical cookery skills to give them a strong understanding of nutrition.
Topics covered include:
1. Food, nutrition and health
2. Food science
3. Food safety
4. Food choice
5. Food provenance.
Progression routes: The food industry is one of the biggest employers and this course can enable students to access employment or apprenticeships. Students can continue to study either hospitality here at the college or in alternative further education options in areas such as catering, where experience at GCSE level can lead to access to higher level courses.
Food Preparation and Nutrition can lead to employment in careers as diverse as science, production, management, marketing and teaching. For example: research and food
product development, food scientist, environmental health officer
